Improve performance and capacity with a new disc
Francis, Sunday January 4 2009 hours 15:08
About a Possidi Aspire One A110 with SSD and wants to mount a hard disk of the traditional type, is faced with several options, more or less complex and laborious: Use a 1.8-inch disk with ZIF interface (what the IPod to understand) , install a 1.3 inch disk, or engage in the most fascinating and dangerous and mount a SATA disk from 2.5 inches in the case.
By leveraging the experience of a reader, Alfredo, we have prepared an article that explains precisely how to take the third option and mount a disk SATA 2.5 inch sull'Aspire One A110.
Why a 2.5-inch disk?
As already mentioned, we have already installed a 1.3-inch hard on our little Netbook Acer (here the guide), we have discarded the hypothesis of 1.8-inch hard because of their high price, their reduced number of revolutions (4800 rpm) and the need to polish the turrets housing screws below for "make room".
The disc by 2.5 inches, is the same type that is installed as standard in the Aspire One A150; these Netbook fact, have a slightly different chassis all'A110, with a "bulge" at the bottom specifically designed to accommodate the disc larger.
Obtain and pay off the SATA connector
The interface S-Ata is a chipset also nell'A110, missing only the physical connector soldered on the motherboard, Alfredo, the author of the mod, it has derived from an external drive S-Ata mounted USB case.
Alternatively you can buy a Molex 47018-2001 connector, is sold in Italy by farnel (link).
Once the connector soldered on the motherboard there is a need to weld a bridge (instead of the resistor R364 only nell'A150) to provide the +5 V power supply to our new connector.
Here's what the whole:
Get space in the case dell'A110
Now that the "electronics" of the intervention is completed, the next step with a Dremel nell'asportare towers (shown in photo) that otherwise block the placement of the new disc.
Installation disk
Completed this delicate transition, we can proceed with its true disk and after application of insulating materials in the metal parts of its chassis to prevent accidental short circuits with other components of the motherboard.
Here's what the new disc in its place:
The reclosing of the case involves a slight deflection of the card right to reside connectors audio, usb and SD slot (remember? The A150 has a bulge on the bottom to prevent this), but this should not affect the operation of the Netbook .
The performances are not bad: we have only partial data, but we are talking of 44 Mb / s Read 39 Mb / s in writing. More information can also be found on the topic long time ago appeared on AspireOneUser.com.
Special thanks go to Alfredo, who has provided us with photos and availability.

5 January 2009Very useful! So 'because the battery lasts ... and how much heat ... I would put a ide pata from 4200 rpm ...
Francesco
5 January 2009@ Paul: there is no interface Pata, Sata only .... Cheil say if the disc goes to 4200rpm maybe you refer to a disk to 1.8 ", so if you had the look here:

5 January 2009no wait .... the speech was linked to the first post ... I have a hd momentus 4200.2 seagate 80 gb (4200 rpm) ... and I would quell'adattatore with ZIF / ide that I made you see in the article .. Hello!

6 January 2009the battery lasts 2 hours with wifi on (talking with sata hd)
think that with sata hd you have to do you do it in half of the goal of the time it takes with ssd
hello world

6 January 2009@ Paul, but your disk, which I can not find info that interface have? and what size is it?

7 January 2009Alfredo, I am tempted to experiment in the amendment to add a HD 2.5 but I did not quite clear how and where to solder the connector on the sata card dell'aspire take and where electrical energy.
You could learn these points?
Cesare
7 January 2009It would also be useful to have benchmarks for reference, perhaps made with CrystalDiskMark for a comparison.
Thank you
Paul
7 January 2009The connector is near the expansion of ram ... there is a white sticker that hides the contacts for the connector sata ... you can see well in the first picture ... them to the connector near the cpu fan ... for the electricity you have jumpered the connector r364, also close to the connector of the fan, however if you read unmount written ... there are two solder bridges and so you have to 'reach the correct voltage to the connector sata you enter .... looking for benchmarks and testing asus eepc with hard disk ... are similar then obviously depends on who put hd ... and its caratterisctiche.
Hello!

18 January 2009Legendary ... I have done as you described and now I have a little "monster" that turns a marvel with vista business ... thanks

20 January 2009Hello guys I would also make this change .. I have an external hd samsung can take them from the connector and mount it's just that I'm afraid to do some casino xciò ... I will do from a technical ... xò objectively I would like to know if it is as dangerous thing. . senzo ie that nothing works after nn + ... nn lo so that you are taking any responsibility is just right ... I would like advice on the risk to which I go in against .. thanks guys

on 14 April 2009Hello everyone, I'm preparing to make the change as indicated in the instructions, but I noticed around the network that the sata receptacle on the A150 version is different from that sold by Farnell of Molex, certainly if you could find what would be much better
anyone know tell me how to do

on 14 April 2009I just finished editing, but also to you the A1 does not rest well on all 4 feet once done everything? Becomes a bit wrong?
